Hawk’s Story
Hawk was an exceptional all-age dog whose career was defined by both remarkable success and uncommon heart. He placed in his first Amateur stake at just two and a half years old, then went on to win both his first Open and Amateur at only three years of age. Over the course of his career, Hawk accumulated 54 Amateur points and 58 Open points for a total of 112 All-Age points, earning six Amateur wins and six Open wins. He qualified for eleven Nationals and was a finalist at the 2020 National Retriever Championship, firmly establishing himself as an elite competitor.
Beyond the accolades, Hawk’s greatest legacy was his extraordinary ability to adapt and connect with his owner and handler, Scott Leonescu. In 2019, Scott suffered a life-altering stroke, and at the time, his survival and certainly his return to handling was uncertain. Throughout this journey, Hawk proved to be far more than a great trial dog; he showed what it means to be a true companion.
As a team, Scott and Hawk were truly something special to witness. Hawk seemed to instinctively understand Scott’s limitations, seamlessly adapting to casts given with only one arm and responding with precision and confidence. Together, they continued to finish trials and compete at the national level, displaying a level of teamwork that was nothing short of surreal. Hawk’s intelligence, sensitivity and willingness made him an unforgettable partner. Most importantly, it made him a dog whose impact reached far beyond ribbons and points.
Hawk will always be remembered not only as a 100 plus point dog and National Open Finalist, but as a once in a lifetime companion who defined what it truly means to be a great teammate.
